More info, for interested Perl users: I run CentOS 5 on the server with
the dirvish wiki on it, and an automated security update of perl
( perl-5.8.8-10.el5_0.2.i386.rpm ) overwrote the 84841 byte file:

... with a 36168 byte truncated version. The CPAN force install of
Scalar::Util put the file back. Now I should tell the CentOS people
and the RedHat people that their security-related rpm update can cause
breakage. Thanks to Eric Wilhelm of the Portland Perl Mongers for
telling me where to look!
