Installs under Linux distributions, at least when installed via a package
manager, will likely follow the FHS.

On Debian (ii dirvish 1.2-1):

jasonb at sarah:~$ dpkg -L dirvish | grep bin
/usr/bin
/usr/bin/dirvish-locate
/usr/sbin
/usr/sbin/dirvish
/usr/sbin/dirvish-runall
/usr/sbin/dirvish-expire

The default target for --prefix for any software I have ever installed that
uses GNU autoconf/automake is /usr/local, which always seemed reasonable to
me.
